Thunderstorms on the way
The MetService has issued a prediction for squally thunderstorms in the Auckland region tomorrow between 2 am tonight and 10 am tomorrow. This could result in heavy rain and the possibility of strong winds in local areas that may have the potential to uproot trees, blow off roofs, and bring down power lines.
Auckland people can minimise the effects of the weather by following a few simple steps.
• Secure any loose materials around your house that could become airborne.
• Check your roof before the storm.
• Bring rubbish bins that might blow away indoors.
• Shelter and secure pets.
• Boaties are recommended to check their moorings.
• Power and phone services may be disrupted. We recommend you have a torch and a battery-powered radio so you can listen to weather alerts. You also may want to have a gas cooker ready.
• Take care driving.
• If the weather gets very bad close curtains, stay away from windows, shelter further inside the house and open a window on the sheltered side of the house.
People are encouraged to follow the advice above and remain up-to-date on the weather situation by listening to your local radio station, watching the television, or through the internet.
Please contact your local council for more advice.
