Steer clear of Burma Road again this weekend
Motorists are again warned to steer clear of Burma Road, between Johnsonville and Khandallah in Wellington, this weekend
(16-17 August) due to delays caused by work to build a new Rangoon Street railway overbridge.
Burma Road – the main arterial route through Wellington’s western suburbs – will be reduced to one lane while large
cranes are used in the bridge work.
Temporary automatic traffic lights will be operating – but motorists heading from Johnsonville to Khandallah and
vice-versa are urged to go via the Hutt Road and Ngauranga Gorge if they want to avoid delays.
The single-lane restriction will be in place between 8am and 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
City Council Infrastructure Director Stavros Michael says the demolition of the old single-lane Rangoon Street Bridge
required the closure of one lane of Burma Road last weekend. Traffic was banked up to Ngaio and Khandallah, especially
around midday on Saturday.
“We urge people who have to get kids to sports matches or similar to steer clear of Burma Road during the weekend.”
The old wooden Rangoon Street bridge is to be replaced by a modern two-lane bridge. Construction work is expected to be
completed early in 2009.
