Kapiti waste must go to a compliant landfill
The agreement Kapiti Coast District Council has with Mid West Disposals for the disposal of waste from Kapiti requires
that waste material from Kapiti goes to a fully consented and compliant landfill, Council’s Group Manager Assets & Services Gary Simpson said today.
“In the event that the Hokio landfill is operating in breach of its resource consent our contract requires the waste to
go to another location. That alternative location would probably be the Bonny Glen landfill.”
Mr Simpson made these comments after a report from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment pointed to
concerns over the operation of the Hokio landfill and alleged breaches of its resource consents.
“In relation to the Parliamentary Commissioner’s report, we won't be commenting on it other than to note that we are not
involved with the operation of the Hokio landfill or the management of any Horowhenua District Council facility.
“Kapiti Coast District Council will not be approaching the Horowhenua District Council over the matter as it is a
contractual one between that Council and its landfill operator,” Mr Simpson said.
Kapiti Coast’s district’s new resource recovery centre at the Otaihanga landfill is scheduled to open at the beginning
of November.
“We expect that will significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. At this stage no firm date has been set
for the closure of the Otaihanga landfill itself and no Council collected waste will be going outside the district until
the landfill is closed.”
