Crossways sold
“The decision by the Presbyterian Church to sell Crossways Community house to a private bidder is very disappointing,”said Lambton Ward Councillor and Mt Victoria resident Iona Pannett today.
The house was put on the market recently after a long campaign to retain the community centre in Mt Victoria.
“The house should have stayed in community hands, especially after an impressive effort by the community saw them raising $1,000,000 in less than a year,” said Ms Pannett.
“The sale shows that some in the Church care more about maintaining expensive historic properties than supporting community building and just decision making processes. This is somewhat ironic as some in the Church often make public commitments to the latter two principles,” said Ms Pannett.
“However, I’m pleased to hear that the Mt Victoria community will continue to work towards purchasing or leasing space for a community centre and crèche.
“The efforts of the Crossways Trust are an inspiring example of a community working together to provide for its own needs,” said Ms Pannett.
