Good response to proposed Residential 2 changes
More than 750 people have given their feedback on Auckland City Council’s proposed changes to demolition controls on
Residential 2 properties.
The feedback is being analysed by council officers and will be reported to the City Development Committee on Thursday,
14 August.
Owners and occupants of character homes in Residential 2 zones were invited to comment on maps which indicated streets,
or parts of streets, where demolition controls on pre-1940s character homes may be lifted.
Letters advising of the proposed changes were mailed to 13,000 owners and occupants of 8112 character houses in
Residential 2 garden suburbs, of which 4128 houses were potentially affected. Currently, under Plan Change 163, all
homes in Residential 2 zones are covered by a blanket requirement for owners to obtain resource consent before removal
or demolition of pre 1940s homes.
This blanket approach is subject to appeals to the Environment Court and the council is seeking a compromise solution.
“We’re very pleased at such a high response rate to our request for feedback,” says Councillor Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga,
chairperson of the City Development Committee. “It’s obvious from an early analysis of feedback that people have taken
the opportunity to express a wide range of opinions on heritage and Residential 2 issues.
“So far the highest number of people support the blanket approach, but the committee will receive a further report next
week before determining the next steps.”
