Fun and fashion: Muslim style
Women of Wellington – learn more about Islam and have fun too.
Wellington City Library’s Migrant Outreach Advisor Ada Nally says all women are invited to attend a celebration of Islamic fashion at the Ruth Gotlieb Library in Kilbirnie this Thursday evening, as part of the Islamic Awareness Week celebrations.
“This is great opportunity for women to talk with some of their fellow Wellingtonians whom they might not ordinarily meet and learn more about other cultures in a light-hearted atmosphere,” says Ada.  “Some of the women from the Wellington Mosque have graciously agreed to be our fashion models and show the women of Wellington their culture, religion and favourite outfits.”
Rehanna Ali, spokesperson for the Wellington Mosque, welcomes the event.  “Because Islamic fashion is something of a new sight on Wellington streets, it can sometimes be viewed as a barrier,” she says.  “This event is a wonderful opportunity for us to use that same fashion to build bridges of understanding and experience.  And of course it gives us a marvellous excuse to dress up!”
Out of respect for the Muslim women taking part, this event is women only.  Light refreshments will be provided and women are invited to join in the festivities at the Ruth Gotlieb Library in Kilbirnie Crescent on Thursday 7 August from 6pm onwards.  The fashion show will start at 6.30pm and guests are encouraged to mix and mingle and have a fantastic time.
