River walkways closed due to high river levels
31 JULY 2008
URGENT Immediate release
As a result of continued heavy rain overnight the Waikato River has reached the 15m level in the city.
Water levels have reached walkways in some areas and subsequently large sections of walkways around the river will be closed.
A significant landslide has occurred overnight on the river bank between Hamilton Parade, London St and Bryce St. The area is very dangerous as sections of the walkway have been washed away. The walkway is closed and will remain closed after river levels subside for restoration.
Residents are asked to respect barriers as the hazards along that section of river are significant.
Residents are asked to take extreme care generally if near the river and to avoid using the river walkways until further notice.
