Rivers Rising in Storm Conditions
While no significant problems are being experienced at this stage along Hawke’s Bay rivers due to the current storm, Hawke's Bay Regional Council warns that the region’s rivers are rising and will continue to rise overnight.
Hawke's Bay Regional Council staff are monitoring rainfall and river levels, and liaising with district councils.
Parts of Hawke’s Bay appear to be getting more rain than the Met Service predicted. Heavier rain in smaller catchments could result in rapid rises in streams, but Council cannot predict if or where this may occur.
Although the heavy rain is expected to ease in a few hours, there will be a delay between the rain easing and rivers rising to reach their peak. Rivers may not peak until tomorrow.
River side (berm) areas should be avoided, and Council staff have been in contact with farmers leasing river berm areas to warn them to remove stock or equipment were necessary.
Surface flooding is the main problem and the drains and pumps are working to capacity to clear the water.
Rainfall over the last 12 hours has been around 30-40 mm in southern part of the region, around 50 mm on the Heretaunga Plains and in the ranges up to 106 mm. In the Wairoa district (last 12 hours) rainfall has been between 20mm on the coast and up to 80mm in the ranges.
Information on rainfall and river levels is available from www.hbrc.govt.nz - look on the home page under Online Information.
