Right-hand turn closure tomorrow at SH2 / Moonshine Road intersection
Transit is advising motorists that right-hand turns will be stopped at the intersection of Moonshine Road and SH2
tomorrow.
Transit Regional Manager Graham Taylor says the change is part of the upgrade of three intersections on SH2 River Road
and will take place as soon as work has been completed at the new Whakatiki Street intersection.
“We indicated some time ago that right-hand turns would be stopped at Moonshine Road as a wire rope median barrier is
about to be installed making it impossible to do anything other than turn left in and left out at this intersection with
SH2. Now that day is here we want people to be aware of the impending change and can alter their travel accordingly.”
Mr Taylor says before the right-hand turn is closed most of the work at Whakatiki Street needs to be completed. This
includes sealing the road, which can’t be done if the weather is poor.
“As the weather has been suitable so far this week, the sealing has been done yesterday and today (28-29 July). This
means the right-hand turn will be closed at Moonshine Road from 10am tomorrow, Wednesday, 30 July.”
If for some reason the work at Whakatiki Street isn’t at the stage required, Mr Taylor says everyone should be prepared
for the right-hand turn ban to come into effect from 10am on any subsequent day after tomorrow.
“The only day we wouldn’t close the right-hand turn would be Sunday so we’re asking people to be ready for the change
when it happens.”
Transit expects safety will be much improved at Moonshine Road with the right-hand turn closed, as will safety at the
other two remaining intersections when work at all three are completed.
Mr Taylor thanked Wellingtonians for their continued patience while this work has been carried out as he appreciated
roadworks could be frustrating at times.
“We know that people understand the end result will be worth it in terms of improved safety on this section of highway
and that is the important point of this work.”
