SH2 between Paeroa and Waihi remains closed following a fatal crash in the Waikino Gorge this morning.
The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is currently investigating the crash that happened shortly after 7.30am.
Initial indications are the crash occurred when a Waihi bound car lost control on a left hand bend and crossed into the path of a Paeroa bound utility vehicle.
The 17-year-old male driver of the car died of his injuries at the scene.
His name has not yet been released.
SH2 is expected to remain closed for another two hours to allow initial investigations to be completed.
Diversions have been set up at both Waihi and Paeroa however Police are advising due to the alternative routes being considerably longer in distance non-essential travel should be avoided.
