Last chance to claim rates rebates
23 June 2008
Older people have just one week left to claim the rates rebate assistance they’re entitled to, says Age Concern New Zealand.
Applications for the current (2007/08) rating year have to be with local councils by 5pm next Monday, 30 June.
“People on low incomes, which includes many people on national superannuation, are eligible for rebates,” Age Concern New Zealand chief executive Ann Martin says.
“A typical couple on national super could get up to $500 back. This assumes they have little other income and pay at least $1000 in rates; a common scenario for older people."
The maximum rebate is $500 – Age Concern says this is welcome but could be a drop in the bucket when all older people are being affected by the rising cost of living and some face rates bills of several thousand dollars.
“Although assistance for older people struggling to pay rates from fixed incomes is welcome, the real solution is to get rates rises under control,” Ann Martin says.
