Incident type: Bank Robbery
Police cordoned part of the Bishopdale Mall in Christchurch this afternoon after a male went into the Westpac bank and presented a note demanding money around 1.40pm. The male dropped a suspicious looking bag in the bank before leaving with a small amount of cash.
The NZDF Bomb Disposal Squad and a Customs Bomb Dog unit assisted Police at the scene. A risk assessment was carried out and a decision was made to detonate the bag. There were no explosives contained in the bag There have been no arrests at this time in relation to this incident. The offender is described as a male Caucasian in his early thirties.
