Trolley Derby takes a break
Nelson's trolley derby fans have a year off - meaning extra time to come up with even more creative speed machines for
2010.
Derby organiser Antony Hodgson says the year's break is aimed at revamping the Fresh Choice Collingwood Street Trolley
Derby for relaunch in 2010.
"What we have now is great, especially for the participants, but we think we can enhance the event more for the rest of
the crowd," he said. "We want to create much more of a festive, 'whole-afternoon' experience with activities to
entertain the spectators in between the races."
Hodgson said Fresh Choice was an ideal sponsor, and remained fully committed to the event.
"Of course it's critical to them that the crowd has a really fantastic time and that's where the changes are aimed," he
said. "Whatever ideas come up gravity powered trolley racing will remain the core of the event."
Meantime - there will be some trolley action this summer to keep the devotees happy.
"There is a distinct possibility that a Christchurch-based film company will be making a feature-length trolley derby
movie, in Collingwood Street, in February or March 2009 and they will be looking for drivers and their trolleys to take
part," Hodgson said. "We will also look at holding the warm up races in Marsden Valley during February or March 2009 to
keep the fans' wheels rolling."
