Support the Winter Food Appeal this Saturday
Wellingtonians are asked to give generously this Saturday to the food bank winter appeal.
Downtown Community Ministry volunteers will be collecting food donations from grocery shoppers all day at three
Wellington supermarkets. People are encouraged to contribute to the food appeal as they walk into the supermarket and
place a donation in the trolley on their way out.
Sought after items are tinned fish and meat, soups and packet foods, that include meat such as pasta and rice risotto,
and can be heated and eaten easily. Also cans with tear tabs (that don't require a can opener) are well liked by food
bank clients. Other items in high demand are milk powder, washing powder and toilet rolls. By adding an extra food item
to their trolley as they make their weekly grocery trip, shoppers can help ensure everyone is fed this winter.
Donations to the appeal can be made at Wellington City New World, Newtown New World and Metro New World on Willis St.
Other food banks will be collecting at various supermarkets around the region on the day as well.
The DCM food bank provides essential food items for people on low incomes. Coordinator David Cross says, "Recent
increases food, petrol and power prices has made the foodbank service an even more important part of peoples lives".
"We're very thankful to NewstalkZB, the participating supermarkets and all the volunteers that help with this appeal."
