Bag a book and sack the plastic – local libraries go plastic free
North Shore Libraries are doing their bit for the environment by giving up plastic bags.
The seven branches of North Shore Libraries are replacing their plastic bags with cotton bags which are sturdier than
plastic and can be re-used.
East Coast Bays and Albany Village Libraries Manager Ann Hill says most of the libraries are using up the last of their
plastic bag stock, and in the case of East Coast Bays Library the plastic bags have already gone.
“We introduced cotton bags at a charge of $2.00 several years ago for reasons of environmental sustainability and to
ensure that as an arm of council we were meeting its sustainability requirements.
“Our customers seem happy with our move, particularly the fact that we are offering natural cotton bags as opposed to
polyester.
“Since then we have more actively promoted the bags and we have reduced the small charge for them to $1.50, says Ms
Hill.
The North Shore City Council is a leader in sustainability, and Sustainability Manager Michael Field congratulates the
libraries on their efforts.
“This is a great initiative which is yet another step towards an environmentally sustainable North Shore,” says Michael
Field.
