Priority lane will give buses a free run

The first bus lane in Hamilton will go into operation on Monday 5 May 2008, the first day of the second term. The
dedicated lane will run along the east side of Hukanui Road between Elmira Avenue and to the intersection of Clarkin
Road/Snell Drive – Davies Corner.
Transport committee chairman Dave Macpherson says the lane will mean buses can get a free run that will make a
difference especially during the week day morning peak traffic time of 7.30–9am.
“This section of Hukanui Road carries around 22,000 vehicles a day. With the improvements made, including the bus lane
and new pedestrian signals, buses will be able to shave off their travel time from what it has been through this area.
This has been achieved with minimal effect on other traffic.”
The initiative is part of the Access Hamilton programme to encourage efficient use of the roading network.
The bus priority lane can be used by buses, cyclists, motor cyclists and mopeds. Property owners may cross the bus lane
in order to gain access to their houses. Motorists are not allowed to stop or park in the lane and the lane can not be
used as a ‘drop off zone’. Enforcement officers will be onsite during the operational hours of 7.30–9am Monday to
Friday.
In order to install the bus lane the pedestrian crossings to the local schools have been signalised. Pupils will be
instructed in the safe use of these signals which will become operational for the beginning of the school term.
