Whakamarama: Train Derailment

Location of incident: Whakamarama
Incident type: Train Derailment
Police and emergency services have just arrived at the scene of a train derailment at Plummers Point Road, Whakamarama in the Western Bay of Plenty.
Two passenger carriages were amongst those reported to have been derailed however there are no reported serious injuries.
The derailment is believed to have occurred when the train struck a digger.
No other details are available at this stage - further releases will be made when details become available.

UPDATE 1300hrs.
Police at the scene of the derailment confirm that no passenger carriages were part of the train. Two freight carriages have overturned.
The driver of the digger that was struck by the train received minor bruising and was treated at the scene.
Arrangements are being made to lift the carriages and clear the track. Train Control are aware of the incident.
There are no road-traffic problems as a result of the incident.
No further releases are planned in relation to the incident.
