Media Release on behalf of Tony le Sueur of Hokitika Police On the 20th April 2008 Police attempted to stop GORRIE, who was wanted on a number of fraud offences, as he drove through Haast.
He failed to stop and fled north. His vehicle was located a short time later about 20 kilometres north of Haast, GORRIE had decamped into the surrounding bush. Further enquiries on the vehicle found that it had been stolen from Gore about 10 days earlier.
On the 21st April GORRIE had made his way to Haast when he was seen by Police as he attempted to hitchhike south. When approached GORRIE fled into a paddock on foot before being apprehended by Constable MANSON, the sole officer on duty. GORRIE was not co-operative and was subdued with pepper spray before being placed in handcuffs. GORRIE is being held in custody and is to appear in the Greymouth District Court on the 22nd April. At this stage he is facing charges of unlawfully converting a motor vehicle, failing to remain stopped, driving while forbidden and theft.
