Volunteer Surf Lifeguard Patrols Finish This Weekend
This Sunday, 6 April 2008, Surf Life Saving Northern Region volunteer lifeguards will finish patrols for the 2007/2008
season.
Since Labour Weekend 2007, 1200 volunteers have patrolled 21 beaches from Raglan to the Far North on weekends and public
holidays.
With surf lifeguards off duty from next week, beachgoers are encouraged to follow basic surf safety rules such as never
swimming alone, parents to watch over children in the water, using fins when body boarding and if in doubt about the
conditions or ones abilities then staying out of the water.
Surf Life Saving Northern Region Lifesaving Manager, Dean Storey, says the public should also take careful note of water
safety signage at beaches and if any member of the public witnesses a water emergency they should call 111 Police
immediately.
“Lifeguards will continue to function in a callout capacity, responding via Police for any water emergency in the
off-season.”
Beaches patrolled this season by Surf Life Saving Northern Region:
Far North (Ahipara), Whangarei Heads, Ruakaka, Waipu Cove, Mangawhai Heads, Omaha, Orewa, Red Beach, Long Bay, Browns
Bay, Mairangi Bay, Milford, Takapuna, Muriwai, Bethells Beach, North Piha, South Piha, Karekare, Kariaotahi, Sunset and
Raglan.
