It’s our place and our future
‘Our Place, Our Future’ is the catch cry for the Kapiti Sustainable Home & Garden Show being held on Saturday and Sunday April 5 and 6 in the Kapiti Primary School grounds.
The Kapiti Coast District Council, in association with Coastlands Shoppingtown, is running its third garden show but
it’s a Garden Show with a sustainable twist.
The Kapiti Sustainable Home and Garden Show still focuses on water use and gardening in a way that conserves water, but
also includes eco-design assistance, ways to build and maintain sustainable homes and other information to promote
sustainable lifestyles on the Kapiti Coast.
“Sustainability is a bit of a buzzword today,” Mayor Jenny Rowan said, “but it’s a clear focus of where the Kapiti Coast
needs to head.
“Our definition of sustainability and sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present
generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
“Put simply, it’s living today in a way that will let our kids and their kids continue to enjoy something close to what
we enjoy today. We’re doing our bit for the future now.
“The Kapiti Sustainable Home and Garden Show is our way of demonstrating to the people of our district that
sustainability is not just a word or a concept but a way of approaching everything we do with an eye to what effects it
may have in the future.”
The response to the call for exhibitors to demonstrate products and services that support the sustainable home and
garden approach has produced more than 50 groups and companies all eager to demonstrate how they can help Kapiti Coast
residents save money and contribute to the goal of a sustainable Kapiti Coast.
From water tank and greywater system suppliers to a waterless carwash and solar heating as well as a wide variety of
drought resistant plants and mulches, there’s something that will interest every one.
“We also have a number of activities for the children so that parents can have a good look at what’s on offer while the
children are kept amused,” says event manager Di Traynor.
