Mayor joins in Feet First Walk to School Week fun

North Shore Mayor Andrew Williams accompanied Campbells Bay Primary’s busiest walking school bus to school yesterday, as
part of national Feet First Walk to School Week.
Campbells Bay Primary was one of thirty North Shore schools to participate in Feet First Walk to School Week this year,
which centred around Walk to School Day on March 5.
Mayor Williams joined the familiar Park Rise walking school bus, of which he was a foundation parent, for the scenic
walk through Centennial Park to the school, where they were greeted by Principal John McGowan.
“Walk to School Day saw the majority of our 650 students either walking or biking to and from school, “said Mr McGowan.
“We are very lucky that the walking school bus culture has been firmly planted within our school, creating close
relationships with parents and children alike.
“The buses require little maintenance for such a big reward. Thanks to our dedicated parent helpers we are very proud to
have four buses up and running.”
North Shore City Travelwise co-ordinator Nicola Maire said Feet First Week aims to get parents and children out of cars
and onto the footpaths.
“On average 50 per cent of New Zealand children are driven to school every day and Feet First Week hopes to change that.
“Students are encouraged to keep up the good walking habits formed during the week,“ Miss Maire said.
Land Transport New Zealand figures estimate up to 12,000 North Shore children participated in the national event this
year.
