Collingwood Street Fresh Choice Trolley Derby March 8th
May the force be with them (that’s the force of gravity) for this year’s Collingwood Street Fresh Choice Trolley Derby.
This Saturday 80 trolleys and 101 drivers will be hurtling down Collingwood Street in a daring display of speed and fun - plus a hint of glamour. Event Director Antony Hodgson says the regulars will be back to defend their titles:
“Last year’s Monarch of the Hill, Tim Bayley, will be back with his wood-ribbed Red Rak Racer II,” he said, “and reigning Style Meister winners, Brian and Sharon Smith from Christchurch are bringing three replica trolleys - a 1936 Auto Union, 1925 Bugatti and an Auto Union Avis Record Wagen.”
Bayley was clocked by Nelson police last year at 70 kmh but the event is not just about speed. This year there’s a new trophy for the most glamorous trolley design or matching costume - the World Of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum Trophy for Style-Meister Of The Hill. Richard Grimes, Manager of the WOW museum has commissioned the new trophy and will be judging trolley and driver combinations during the morning session.
Antony expects a crowd of over four thousand. He says the mix of speed and back yard ingenuity makes the event a crowd pleaser for all ages.
“It touches children’s imaginations and gets them so involved we’ve got a waiting list for the Sprinters (11- 14 years) grade and some very excited Nippers (under 6).”
The heats are held early and spectators are assured of an action packed finale. There will be crowd giveaways from V and Popsicle and sponsored prizes in each event. Organisers make every effort to make this event safe for participants and spectators. Trolleys will be inspected at registration. Spectators are asked to stay behind the barriers at all times.
The Nelson City Council produces the Summer Festival to celebrate community events for locals and to enhance the experience of visitors to the city.
Collingwood Street Fresh Choice Trolley Derby: Heats start at 10.30am with finals 1.30-3.30pm, Saturday March 8th Collingwood St between Brougham St and Nile St. Entry free. More info on line at www.nelsonfestivals.co.nz
