New home buyers and property opportunists to attend unusual charity auction
A brand new three-bedroom home built free for Hibiscus Coast Hospice will go under the hammer in Orewa on March 6th with all proceeds going to charity.
New home buyers and property opportunists will be among the many people attending an unusual charity auction next week.
The three-bedroom home with study at 126 Grand Drive in Orewa that is up for sale was the inspiration of local businessman Ross Morley.
Mr Morley owns the G J Gardner (Rodney) franchise and the auction marks the end of what has been a three-year project that commenced when three local property developers, Sir Ross Jansen, Leigh Hopper and Ian Boocock, donated a section to Hibiscus Coast Hospice
“It was suggested that a section needs a house so I decided to see what support I could get to build that house,” recalls Mr Morley.
With the help of more than 50 trades-people, building suppliers and encouragement from the property sector, the house was built over the winter months and keys handed over to Hibiscus Coast Hospice Charitable Trust chairman Howard Jury last October.
Mr Jury says the Free Home for Hospice is the one of the most generous donations ever bestowed on Hospice.
“What makes the project so special is the great many people who gave their time and expertise at no cost. Trades people, landscapers plus a number of building products suppliers donated time and material.
“Harcourts Orewa, a long-term supporter, has also been heavily involved – providing sales and marketing support for free.
“Many of the people helping us are based here on the Hibiscus Coast and this makes the Free Home for Hospice a truly remarkable community effort,” says Mr Jury who adds that even the Whangaparaoa Scouts pitched in.
Among the companies supporting the initiative were building product suppliers who for the past three months have used the house as a show home to exhibit products new to the New Zealand market.
At 6pm on Thursday March 6th champion auctioneer Phil McGoldrick from Harcourts will point his hammer at the large number of people expected to attend the charity sale.
Mr McGoldrick is Harcourts National Auction Manager and is making a special trip from Christchurch to sell the Orewa property.
He won the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand’s Auctioneering Championship in 2006, was runner-up 2007, and has twice represented the country and been a finalist in the Australasian Auction Championships.
Harcourts Orewa Branch Manager Sabine Davison says her team is thrilled to be able to support such a worthy cause and was pleased to be able to attract the company’s top auctioneer.
“Phil is in very high demand especially for charity auctions. But given this was such an unusual auction he didn’t hesitate to accommodate us,” she says.
Harcourts Orewa is a long-time supporter of Hibiscus Coast Hospice and has previously sold two properties for the charity in addition to other fundraising activity over the years. Both sales, and the upcoming sale of the Free Home for Hospice, have been done at no cost to Hospice,” adds Ms Davison.
The campaign Harcourts has worked on for the hospice property, which is located at 126 Grand Drive in Orewa, has included organising significant free advertising from PMP Maxum (publishers of Harcourts Bluebooks), Hibiscus Coast Property Press and The Outlook, organising free signage courtesy of ABC Photosigns, direct marketing to Harcourts extensive database, working and negotiating with current and new buyers, and conducting numerous open homes in the lead up to the onsite auction at 6pm on Thursday 6 March 2008.
Howard Jury and Ross Morley are encouraging would-be buyers to attend the auction.
“The lucky person who buys this home will have the added bonus of knowing that the money they pay for the house is going directly to the local community. How many home buyers boast that?” they ask.

The charity auction takes place at 6pm on Thursday March 6th at 126 Grand Drive, Orewa. The home is located on the corner of Flavell Road and Grand Drive. Flavell Road is new and may not be on some maps. If entering from the northern end of State Highway One, the Free Home for Hospice is one of the first homes on the left and is well signposted.
