Christchurch - Fatal work site accident

Police and Department of Labour staff are currently investigating a fatal accident which occurred at the Jellie Park Aqualand Pool redevelopment. Detective Sergeant Greg Cottam of Papanui Police advises at approximately 10.45 am on Wednesday 27 February 2008 they were notified of a serious accident on the work site involving a worker. Ambulance staff attended however a 53 year old male who worked on the site was pronounced dead on the scene.
Detective Sergeant Cottam advised that there were no suspicious circumstances to the death and that it was a routine Coronial enquiry conducted jointly with the Department of Labour.
The site was closed for the remainder of the day while the scene was examined and work was expected to resume tomorrow. He said enquiry staff had appreciated the co-operation of staff on the site at a traumatic time for them. The name of the deceased workmen was not being released until the following day due to difficulty in contacting next of kin.
