Glenfield Intermediate makes great use of Seaweek money

Winning the grand prize in a sand sculpture competition has enabled Glenfield Intermediate students to spread the word
about protecting and caring for our environment.
Last year four year eight students successfully took out the grand prize of $500 for their school at North Shore City
Council’s Seaweek sand sculpture event held at Long Bay.
The Rays – Debbie Lee, Sherry Pail, Felix Bennett and Sarah Collard – and their art teacher, Anna McIntosh, decided to
use their prize money to buy materials to create environmentally themed murals for their school grounds.
The five murals were painted on fibre board using Resene house paints for durability and the murals are displayed on the
wall of the dance and drama classrooms by the main entrance to the school.
North Shore City Council’s environmental programmes coordinator, Jo Campbell, says this is a wise use of the prize
money.
“The students were studying the effects of global warming and climate change and had been trying to promote a culture of
caring for and protecting the environment.”
The Rays team member and painter of the large mural, Sarah Collard, says the single figure represents care and respect
for the environment and this is how she wants Glenfield Intermediate students to behave towards the environment.
Seaweek 2008 begins on Saturday, March 1. North Shore City Council is proud to support the Perils of the Deep Blue Sea
production at Fort Takapuna on the weekends of March 1 and 2 and 8 and 9. For further information please visit
