New radio station to be launched in Lyttelton
Lyttelton is to launch New Zealand’s latest radio station next week. Volcano Radio 88.5FM will go to air from February 24. Station manager Carmel Courtney said the station will launch on the same day as annual Lyttelton street party with a stall, DJ show and sundowners party.
Radio in Lyttelton last broadcast five years ago. It operated out of three different locations over ten years. ``We respect its history and we’re excited about bringing it back. Today technology has made it possible to broadcast this creative community with a fascinating history to the world via the internet; that’s where we are heading," Courtney said.
"We have secured the perfect location to broadcast community radio -- the fourth floor of Shadbolt House, which is an iconic beacon in our port town."
Volcano Radio, which will operate as an incorporated society, has one full-time employee, broadcaster Chris Church and 30 volunteers.
Winz has offered help for a transitional time and BUSINESSES will be asked to help sponsor shows. The commercial- free 24/7 station has been privately funded to date. Courtney said they would build up ‘friends of Volcano Radio’ and also apply for grants and lottery funding.
