Neighbourhood Support Auckland welcomes action on graffiti
As people at the forefront of graffiti control and anti-vandalism initiatives, members of Neighbourhood support groups across Auckland will be heartened that the government has announced plans to take graffiti vandalism more seriously. We totally agree that it is not only the cost of damage that is important, but the intimidation that follows destruction of property and the damage that follows to community morale.
Many neighbourhood support street groups do extensive work combating graffiti and repairing the damage rapidly, usually for free or for the cost of paint from the council.
This community spirit has now been recognised by the government in increased funding for graffiti control programs which will massively assist in our anti-graffiti campaigns. In addition fines have been increased and restorative justice funding introduced which will ensure that residents are better compensated for the damage caused and give them more peace of mind that this form of intrusion into their private property is not OK.
Funding for reparation to public facilities, that are often targeted, out of the offender’s pockets will also be welcomed by councils and residents.
