Christchurch police are investigating a suspicious death after a young man was found dead in Auburn Park, Upper Riccarton this morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Wormald said an anonymous caller contacted the ambulance service at 5.47am to say there was a body in the park.
Police discovered a young man with short ginger/blonde hair, in his late teens or early 20s, dead in the park. He has facial injuries and his death is being treated as suspicious. He was fully clothed but had no identification. Police want to hear from anyone who has a missing friend or relative who fits the description.
Wormald said the anonymous call was made from a phone booth outside a dairy 400m away from where the body was discovered, and the booth and the dairy have been cordoned off. Police would like to hear from whoever made the call from the phone box.
"The young man has some facial injuries which are obviously a concern. Clearly, a person lying in a park with injuries ...we are treating it as a suspicious death."
The body is being examined at the scene and is likely to be moved later this afternoon. The post mortem will take place tomorrow.
