Want to know how to create a smarter garden? Visit North Shore City Council’s stand at the North Shore Home and Garden
Show to find out how.
North Shore City Council environmental education coordinator, Kate Jackson, says the aim is to inspire people to create
a more productive garden for themselves.
“One side represents a productive garden, and will include plants grown by staff at home using compost, worm tea and
worm castings,” she says.
North Shore City Council waste prevention officer for communities, Tony Hart, says the display will include a potager
garden with pots of herbs, vegetables, flowers and fruit trees.
“The focus for the garden is making the connection between what we put out for composting and using that to produce
fantastic fruit and vegetables from your garden,” he says.
“We’ll also have a compost, bokashi bin and a worm farm so people can see how they really work, and an interactive
recycling game for the kids.”
The other side of the display is based on gardening with native plants. The plants are labelled so people know whether
they are coastal forest, stream side plants of pest plants that should be taken out.
“There will also be a prize draw for everyone who completes an electronic survey at the stand, and we’re inviting people
to add their own tips for things you can do at home to keep North Shore City sustainable,” says Kate Jackson.
