Survey Shows Strong Support for New Tunnels in Wellington
There is overwhelming support from the Wellington business community for new tunnels to ease Wellington traffic congestion, according to a survey released today.
The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce survey was in response to the region's Ngauranga to Airport transport study, which the local councils are currently consulting on. It focussed on the proposals to duplicate the Terrace and Mt Victoria Tunnels.
"Respondents were particularly supportive of the proposal to duplicate the Mt Victoria Tunnel with 84% expressing support. 75% of respondents support duplication of the Terrace tunnel," said Chamber CEO, Charles Finny.
"Businesses were asked to say whether they supported or opposed the projects or whether their support was subject to cost.
"In the case of the Mt Vic Tunnel a significant number (46%) supported duplication irrespective of the cost. This, perhaps surprising, unqualified support from a sector which is generally very cost conscious probably shows the extent of the strong backing for the second tunnel.
"The Chamber will use these results to guide its submissions on the proposals. Our view is that a mix of public transport and roading initiatives are necessary to improve the transport network.
"I hope that that this survey provides some balance to the vocal minority who are running a campaign against increased road capacity. It is quite clear that better roading is an enabler of future growth in our economy. We question the motives of those who are opposing the new tunnels. We cannot grow our economy on the back of public transport alone.
"The Chamber regularly surveys members to ensure that it is fully aware of views on important issues affecting the Wellington region," Mr Finny concluded.
