Wellington’s first interactive water play area to open
The wait is over!
Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre’s long awaited interactive water play area, Spray, will be officially opened by Mayor
Kerry Prendergast on Sunday 24 February.
It’s New Zealand’s latest dedicated shallow water spray and play area with an exciting range of water features that will
give families and children a fun and safe aquatic experience.
It’s also a great place for families, communities or corporate groups to spend time together or celebrate birthdays and
special events. The creative and educational water areas have interactive water features and programmes that will change
frequently.
Spray includes the development of a dedicated and secure toddler’s and pre-school area. The school-age children’s area
has two tidal pools with changeable water features and a beach area that is linked to the centre’s new café and outdoor
courtyard.
Mayor Kerry Prendergast says Spray is an exciting project where children aged 12 and under and their families can
experience New Zealand’s first purpose-built interactive shallow water play area.
“This new attraction will create much needed extra water play space for children and families. It will also free up
existing pool space at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre for swimming and other aquatic sports activities.”
The expansion project, which started in 2005 at a cost of $12 million, includes an adapted existing 25m x 8m learner’s
pool and a new entrance and amenity building for hydrotherapy. Capital and Coast District Health Board will use the pool
regularly for its hydrotherapy needs and it will be a dedicated space for the Council’s learn to swim and health and
fitness programmes.
Spray and the hydrotherapy pool will be open daily for public use from Monday 25 February.
