Fire Restriction Conditions
Hastings and Napier Rural Fire Authorities and the New Zealand Fire Service have reviewed the fire danger conditions in
the region and have decided to retain the current fire restrictions until further notice.
Recent gale force winds coupled with high temperatures has increased drought conditions and the fire danger in some
areas, especially in coastal areas and on the Heretaunga Plains.
Although some rain has occurred recently a significant amount of rainfall is required to help reverse drought conditions
and promote new growth in vegetation.
Mike Maguire, Principal Rural Fire Officer at Hastings District Council, said some people were still lighting
incinerators and rubbish fires without first obtaining fire permits. This has been very hazardous, especially during
strong winds and at night.
"Councils are required to authorise all outdoor fires to minimise the risk to people and the community. This is
especially important during recent conditions where fires can be rapidly spread by the wind. Lower Central North Island
had over 100 fires in one night and people need to be careful about their safety," said Mr Maguire.
