Aquatica 08 to make waves in the Viaduct Harbour
Aquatica, a three day celebration of Auckland, is returning to the City of Sails over Auckland Anniversary Weekend 25 –
28 January 2008, and should not be missed.
Aquatica 08 launches with a splash on Friday 25 January with the “Aquatica Live” performance. Come down to Princes Wharf
at dusk (9pm) and see a water based performance spectacle which will include the double hulled waka, the Spirit of New
Zealand, and a light and sound show projected onto jets of water. The evening will be capped off with a choreographed
fireworks display.
The Viaduct will be humming with activity throughout the weekend - carnival rides, street performers, buskers, acrobats
and circus performers, a Fare on the Pier food market, Tall Ships, and the Naval Frigate Te Kaha will be open for public
boarding. There will be performances from the Ports of Auckland Dancing Tugs and the Navy Band, and action in the air
from the Warbirds and Red Chequers. Not to be missed is the Navy’s ‘Beat the Retreat’ gun salute performances, which go
off with a bang.
Saturday night the ‘Legends of Kiwi Rock’ concert will see Te Wero Island and the Viaduct Harbour come alive with
homegrown sounds set amongst the sails. Th’Dudes, The Exponents and Opshop are taking the stage, and tickets can be
found at www.ticketmaster.co.nz.
The action skyrockets on the evening of Sunday 27th – Aquatica is letting off one of the largest firework displays New
Zealand has seen. The excitement starts at 9pm in the Viaduct Harbour.
Monday 28 January sees the maritime action of Aquatica take to the Waitemata Harbour, with hundreds of craft, including
tall ships, tugboats, classic yachts, racing keelers, sloops, sailing dinghies, sailboards and the HMNZS Te Kaha taking
part in the Anniversary Day Regatta.
With all the action going on, thousands of Aucklanders will be making their way to the Viaduct Harbour throughout the
long weekend for Aquatica 08. Getting there doesn’t have to be a hassle. Visit www.maxx.co.nz for public transport
solutions – whether it is by bus, ferry or train.
There are a number of parking buildings in the area including Downtown Carpark, Victoria Street Carpark, Civic Carpark
and Railway Station Carpark – all a short stroll from the action at Aquatica.
The Aquatica 08 festival map is the essential guide listing all the activities and timings, and can be downloaded at
