Omaha reopens after yesterday’s shark incident
Climatech Regional Lifeguards will be back on duty at Omaha Beach after yesterday’s incident involving a three-metre
bronze whaler shark biting the lifeguards inflatable rescue boat.
The shark bit the rear starboard pontoon and deflated the boat when lifeguards went to investigate a shark sighting 100m
off Omaha beach.
Surf Life Saving Northern Region Lifeguard Manager, Dean Storey, says that public should not let the incident put them
off going back into the water.
“Yesterday’s shark attack was an isolated incident. The risk of drowning is far greater than a shark attack. The public
are always advised to swim at lifeguardpatrolled beaches and swim between the flags.
“Public safety is paramount and lifeguards at Omaha will continue to survey the beach for changing conditions throughout
the day."
