New Zealand Police Alert 18:00 11-01-2008 Tasman
Location of incident: Queen Charlotte Sound ,Marlborough
Incident Type: Boating incident.
Police were alerted to a boating incident at Queen Charlotte Sound near Blumine Island this evening. A boatie was motoring in the area when he heard the voice of a young child calling out for 'dad'. The voice was coming from an 8 year who was floating in the water with no life jacket in the middle of the Sound.
The boatie rescued the child and then preceeded to catch up to the childs, fathers boat.
The child was returned to the father who was not impressed and did not show any concern for the child. He has motored off without any thanks to the rescuer.
Picton police were alerted but have been unable to locate the boat in the Picton area.
If it wasn't for the quick actions of a responsible boatie this incident could have quickly turned into another drowning statistic.
