The beat goes on for Music in Parks
Thirteen free concerts during January are kick-starting a summer of live Kiwi music in Aucklanders’ favourite parks and reserves.
This year marks Auckland City Council’s 15th Music in Parks series, showcasing our local music scene and bringing Aucklanders together.
Two popular programmes during the month – Drake Jazz at the Rotunda, and The Culture Garden – will have jazz lovers and those wanting to explore new musical genres captivated.
Drake Jazz at the Rotunda is Auckland’s longest running annual jazz festival set in the historic Auckland Domain band rotunda. During January, these weekly Sunday afternoon concerts feature the talents of Karen Hunter, the Peter Wood Quintet, Mojave and Go Blow.
The Culture Garden presents a wide range of musical genres in Auckland’s more intimate park settings, and provides the opportunity for Aucklanders to discover new music. During January, experience Latin sounds with Kantuta; Scandinavian folk music with Habbadàm; the voices of the Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists from The New Zealand Opera; and bilingual jazz from Whirimako Black.
As the summer hots up, so does the music – and with more than 40 free concerts from January to March, there’s something to suit the tastes of all music lovers.
Music in Parks 2008 is proudly sponsored by Holden Astra and Drake International, and supported by New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), The Lion Foundation, Radioworks (Solid Gold, The Breeze, More FM, Radio Live and Kiwi FM), 95bFM, Mission Bay The Promenade, Ecover, and NZ Rockshops.
