THE NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN TO REPLACE THE PRESENT SYSTEM OF COUNCIL RATES WITH A FAIRER SYSTEM WHICH REFLECTS ABILITY TO PAY AND VALUE FOR MONEY.
media release
17th December 2007
No ratepayers funds for Eden Park upgrade.
The news that ratepayers are still being asked to contribute to an upgrade of Eden Park is outrageous, especially following so quickly on local elections in which councils rates were a major issue.
Auckland City Council and the Auckland Regional Council must resist the tempatation to commit ratepayer funds for this upgrade.
Any shortfall in funding must come from commercial sources who stand to gain financial benefit from the Rugby World Cup 2011 - or central Government which stands to gain huge tax income from additional GST leading up to and including the event..
At this time of year councils are preparing to finalise annual budgets for 2008/9 – it is a good time to remind councils that the recent Rates Inquiry questioned the high levels of council expenditure.
The Eden Park upgrade is not the ratepayers responsibility.
They were not consulted about it.
They should not be made to foot any part of the bill.
Ends.
