The Zoo breaks record with public vote
A strong case of animal attraction has seen The Zoo take home a record-breaking seventh award in the TV Guide’s ”Best on
the Box People’s Choice Awards”.
The Greenstone Pictures’ produced television series about Auckland Zoo and its keepers and animals took out honours in
the best documentary series. It is now the most awarded show or personality in the history of the awards..
The TV Guide awards are the most comprehensive readers’ choice awards in the New Zealand television industry, with more
than 11,000 readers taking part in the vote.
“We’re delighted for Greenstone and the zoo that the show has come out on top again and especially to be the most
awarded show in the history of the TV Guide Peoples Choice Awards,” says Auckland Zoo director, Jonathan Wilcken. “It’s
a real endorsement of the quality of the show, and of New Zealanders’ love for animals and the environment.”
“Viewers have recently watched the ninth series, which focused on both native and exotic endangered animals. The Zoo
screens in 96 countries around the world and is a wonderful way to highlight the plight of animals and profile our great
New Zealand species. We hope that all viewers are inspired to find out more about the animals, the environment, and what
they can do to help make a difference,” says Mr Wilcken.
Greenstone managing director John Harris says, “The viewers’ vote has once again reinforced The Zoo’s place as a leading
New Zealand series. The win is a tribute to the dedicated keepers and the animals at the zoo, as well as Greenstone’s
own creative team. The fact The Zoo screens in dozens of countries around the world is proof of the show’s continuing
appeal.”
Greenstone Pictures is now filming for the tenth series of The Zoo, due to screen later next year.
