Where have all the car wrecks gone?
A recent drop in the number of car wrecks being exchanged for $20 petrol vouchers has the Hastings District Council
wondering where all the car wrecks have gone.
Kevin Deacon, the Council’s Operations Services Manager, said a reduction in the number of wrecks being recycled was
usually matched by an increase in illegal dumpings, but over the past few months both figures had been low.
“An average of 149 wrecks were exchanged for vouchers each month over the past year, but last month we had only 64. We
are glad that unwanted vehicles are not being left on riverbanks or roadsides, but we would like to remind people
considering a spring clean that their wreck is worth $20 if they drop it off free from rubbish.”
Mr Deacon said the scheme had proved extremely popular, with thousands of wrecks exchanged for vouchers since it began.
“The cost to ratepayers to recover abandoned vehicles is always more than $20, so it’s a win-win situation for the
public and for those with wrecks they no longer want.”
To qualify for the $20 petrol vouchers, wrecks must be free of rubbish and delivered during working hours to HB Vehicle
Recyclers in Orchard Road, Hastings.
