Wellington Zoo’s giraffes will be let out into the Zoo’s new African Savannah for the first time on Wednesday 21 November, announced Husbandry Manager Suzette Nicholson today.
‘We can’t wait to let Zahara and Tisa, our giraffes, out into their new enclosure but it will be a bittersweet experience in light of our male giraffe Ricky's death last week.’
‘The cornerstone of the African Savannah is the giraffe house, designed by Athfield Architects.
The house has been built using sustainable materials where possible and a rainwater recovery system has been installed to use for cleaning of the giraffe house.’
‘The giraffe house has been designed for visitors to see behind the scenes as they walk up the internal raised walkway, and the viewing deck over the exhibit will give them the chance to come face to face with the giraffes.’
‘Living alongside the giraffes in the African Savannah will be the zebras, that will be let out on Friday and our ostriches who will move in next week,’ said Suzette.
There will be a public launch for the opening of the African Savannah at Wellington Zoo on the weekend of 1 - 2 December 2007.
