Young Leaders Take Charge
Nelson will be hosting a series of exciting new events this summer conceived and co ordinated by Nelson youth.
Youth Leadership Project Manager, Tiana Nauta says 38 young leaders involved in The New Hub’s Youth Leadership Project
are getting ready to launch a range of events to be held between November and Feburary.
“The projects include a skate competition, a youth carnival, an amazing-race-styled competitive team event in the CBD
and a dance performance,” Tiana says. “There’s also a group of young leaders who are supporting World Prevention of
Child Abuse Day, and another group is working towards creating a fitness project for teens.”
These activities are the culmination of The Youth Leadership Project which began at the New Hub in May. Forty young
people identified as having leadership potential were selected to join the project. Tiana says specialist tutors talked
to the group about leadership skills like public speaking, goal setting, accelerated learning techniques, and project
planning. Now in to the second half the participants have to put their newly acquired skills into practice by engaging
in group projects.
“The young people wanted to do something to benefit the Nelson community and formed six project groups based on shared
interests. The groups were paired up with mentors and through the planning process the young people have gained
practical leadership experience as well as many useful contacts,” Tiana says. “However, for most of the groups there’s
still a long way to go and a lot more work to be done before their projects reach fruition.”
