Transit to lay high friction surface on SH1 Ngauranga Gorge
Transit would like to advise motorists it will be carrying out specialised road surfacing work to a section of the
northbound lanes on SH1 at the top of Ngauranga Gorge from Sunday night.
Transit Central Operations Manager Mark Owen says this maintenance safety work involves laying a high friction surface
on the pavement to ensure vehicles maintain their grip on the road and provide improved skid resistance in wet
conditions. Transit lays this kind of surface in various locations across the country where it has identified a need for
enhanced skid resistance.
Mr Owen says the surfacing will be carried out overnight for five nights from this Sunday between the hours of 8.00pm
and 5.30am. This timeframe allows the contactor to set up and disestablish speed restrictions and lane closures as
required.
The affect to motorists should be minimal due to the timing of the work and because the contractor will keep two lanes
available to traffic at all times. Weather permitting, the work should be finished on Thursday night, 15 November.
Mr Owen asks motorists for their patience and understanding while Transit carries out this maintenance safety work.
