Alex Swney stands for Mayor
Poll says Aucklanders want a better choice
City champion Alex Swney today entered the race to be Mayor of Auckland, spurred on by a groundswell of support from
Aucklanders and new poll data calling for a third serious contender.
Results from the new poll show that only 20.7% of Auckland City voters are satisfied with the existing contenders. Swney
says: “It’s generally acknowledged that until now it’s been a two-horse race, but people obviously want a better
choice.”

add flair, attitude, and experience to the Mayoral race, underpinned by a set of well thought out plans.
With ten years experience as CEO at Heart of the City, the machinery of Council is second nature to Swney. He has worked
with the past four Councils on many civic issues and has led initiatives to fund a number of new city services including
security cameras, city ambassadors, and the free hybrid electric City Circuit buses to help lift the game on Auckland
public transport. He has also been pivotal in the successful campaign for more public waterfront space at the Tank Farm.
Swney’s bid has kicked off with detailed policy statements on rates and public transport, which no other candidate has
done so far. “I believe that Auckland is crying out for a Mayor who not only has some decent policies but also the
energy to deliver,’’ says Swney.
His website is the first launched by a Mayoral candidate and gives Aucklanders an opportunity to see who Alex really is.
It includes a backgrounder on Alex and his family. In partnership with his wife Ange, Alex has also established the New
Zealand premium women’s shoe brand Briarwood, which has both manufacturing and retail operations.
“I’ve started this campaign on the street and I’ll be out there meeting as many Aucklanders as possible,” says Swney.
“There are some big issues and I want to hear what Aucklanders have to say. They’ve got plenty of time to make up their
minds about who should be Mayor. Policies are important, and I’m bringing a new choice to the table.”
