Christchurch City Council media release
Fishing from New Brighton Pier to be restricted
Council voted today to restrict fishing from the pier to certain times and days, with a full review of the process to be undertaken in 12 months time
A person will be employed to enforce the restrictions and the Burwood/Pegasus Community Board has been delegated to decide on the times and days.
Cr Gail Sheriff says the decision is a good compromise.
"We went through a full consultation process and the result came back 50/50 for a total ban on fishing off the pier. This is the next step up where we can give it another shot.
"The pier was always intended as a place for families and children and it is important we don't lose this. Having restricted days means the pier can be used as we always envisaged.
"A review in 12 months will show if this is working or not, and if it isn't then we will consider having a total ban.''
