Seaweek fun on the sands at Island Bay this Sunday
9th March 2007 – Wellington
Forest & Bird Media Advisory – Seaweek fun on the sands at Island Bay this Sunday
A competition to create the best sand sculpture of a Hector’s dolphin, free boat trips and snorkel tours will all be part of the fun to celebrate Seaweek at Island Bay this Sunday.
The Marine Family Open Day will provide heaps of fun ways to learn more about Wellington’s fantastic south coast – and how we can help protect our marine environment.
Forest & Bird Conservation Advocate Kirstie Knowles says a highlight of the day will be a competition to create the best sand sculpture of an endangered Hector’s dolphin.
Hector’s dolphins are in serious decline, and the North Island sub-species, the Maui’s dolphin, numbers just 111 and is at high risk of extinction. Forest & Bird is calling for a nationwide ban on the use of set nets, which are the main threat to these endangered native marine mammals.
Other organisations participating in the open day are the Department of Conservation, Victoria University, Splash Gordon, Lyall Bay and Island Bay Surf Clubs, and Island Bay Divers. For more information on Seaweek activities check out http://www.seaweek.org.nz/
