Toxic blue/green algae warning for Waikanae River
Testing this week has shown Toxic Algae (cyanobacteria) are present in the Waikanae River in the Jim Cooke Park and Greenaway Road area, Kapiti Coast District Council advises.
“Toxic algae can cause illness and death in dogs, and also has the potential to affect the health of humans and other animals,” the Council’s Monitoring, Enforcement & Licensing Team Leader, Rita O’Brien said today.
“Warning signs will be placed in the area immediately and we’ll continue to monitor the river at a number of points and keep the public advised.
“In the meantime, people should keep their dogs away from the river and to ensure children do not play in or near the river.”
Toxic algae are slimy green/brown and form a ‘mat’ over rocks in the water. These mats may also break away and wash up on the shore.
“All contact with these mats should be avoided. In particular, don’t enter the water yourself or allow dogs to enter the river or go any where mats may have been washed ashore.
“Should you, your dog or other animals exhibit signs of illness after being in the vicinity of the river, please consult your Doctor or vet immediately,” Rita O’Brien said.
More information about toxic algae and an updated status of the river can be obtained at Greater Wellington www.gw.govt.nz or from an Environmental Health Officer at your Kapiti Coast District Council.
