Council delighted at speed reduction promise
Kapiti Coast District Council is delighted there is now a commitment from Transit New Zealand to make a significant reduction in speed limits on SH1 through Paekakariki and to put extra warning signs in place, Acting Mayor Ann Chapman said today.
“The council and the Paekakariki Community Board have worked long and hard to get Transit to commit to an immediate speed reduction, and we’re very pleased that action will now be taken,” she said.
The speed reduction and warning signage will be put in place at the dangerous Paekakariki/SH1 intersection until the permanent “seagull” traffic separation island is constructed by end of next summer.
“Like Community Board chair Adrian Webster, I too am heartened that Transit have finally agreed to address the speed limit.
“It is a constructive response to the calls from the Paekakariki community and from the Kapiti Coast community as a whole for action to be taken to make this notorious black spot safer,” Councillor Chapman said.
“We all look forward to some prompt action on the matter.”
