Roadwork category winner for engineering excellence
Auckland City’s upgrade of Great South Road and Sylvia Park Road intersection was announced winner of the roads and
transport category at the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards 2006.
The $9.5 million project is one of the largest construction works undertaken by the council for one of the busiest
intersections in Auckland.
Matthew Rednall, Auckland City’s transport roads manager says “The intersection upgrade and bridge replacement was a
complex project involving innovative approaches to maintain two-way traffic flow for 33,000 vehicles per day, and
continuity of rail services and major utility pipes and cables.”
“While the project presented many challenges, consultation and direct liaison with the public ensured that this major
engineering project avoided significant disruption to the local community,” says Mr Rednall.
Works included replacing a bridge over the main trunk railway, relocating, protecting or upgrading major sewers,
stormwater drains, high pressure gas mains and electrical transmission cables.
“This intersection upgrade is a great example of sensible roading improvement and it’s great to be recognised for
engineering excellence. As a result of the $9.5 million investment, the region can expect to save around $38 million
over the next 25 years.”
Auckland City’s contractor, Maunsell Limited, provided the scheme assessment, preliminary design, detailed design and
construction observation. They accepted the award at the Gala Dinner at the Te Papa museum in Wellington on 22 November.
