GORDON H. BROWN ART HISTORY LECTURE 2006

Leonard Bell
In Transit: Questions of Home and Belonging in New Zealand Art
Acclaimed specialist in the field of cross-cultural interactions and representations, Leonard Bell, Professor of Art History at University of Auckland, will deliver the fifth Gordon H. Brown Lecture – In Transit: Questions of Home and Belonging in New Zealand Art.
In this lecture, Bell will consider a selection of paintings and photographs from the 1940s to the present by expatriate and migrant artists, to investigate the nature and complexities of boundaries and relationships between peoples and places, and negotiations of socio-cultural, mental, physical, and architectural spaces, which he believes opens up different ways of looking at New Zealand-made art.
Admission is free.
PETER MADDEN: THE LIVING DEAD
Tessa Laird
Sunday 10 December, 2pm
‘The Living Dead’ is an article Auckland based artist, writer, and lecturer Tessa Laird wrote in response to Peter Madden's work in 2004. It was first published in Natural Selection, the on-line Australasian art reviews magazine. Laird adapted the article into a Powerpoint presentation - with a difference. Taking as her cue Madden's cut-up technique, she has created a Powerpoint that aims to be multi-layered, like Madden's art work. ‘The Living Dead’ is a low-tech, high-impact assault on the senses, which offers several more layers of intrigue.
