Transit New Zealand would like to advise motorists of proposed closures for work on the Central Motorway Junction upgrade over the next week.
CMJ Stage 2
Full motorway closures:
Sunday 26 November – CLOSED – overnight from 10pm until 5am the following morning:
• Southern Motorway (SH1) between Nelson St off-ramp and Wellington St on-ramp northbound
Sunday 26 until Thursday 30 November – CLOSED – overnight from 8.30pm until 5am the following morning:
• Southern Motorway (SH1) between Cook St off-ramp and Hobson St on-ramp southbound
Monday 27 until Thursday 30 November – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am the following morning:
• Southern Motorway (SH1) between Symonds/Port/Wellesley off-ramp and Fanshawe St on-ramp northbound
Ramp and link closures:
Sunday 26 November ¬¬¬– CLOSED – during the day from 7am until 7pm:
• Newton Rd on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
Sunday 26 November – CLOSED – overnight from 12.30pm until 5am the following morning:
• Grafton on-ramp to Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound
Sunday 26 November – CLOSED – overnight from 11pm until 5am the following morning:
• Hobson St on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
Sunday 26 November – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
• Port to Northwestern Motorway (SH16 link) including Wellesley St on-ramp
Sunday 26, Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 November – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
• Northwestern Motorway to Southern Motorway (SH16 to SH1) link southbound
• Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to Port Link portbound
Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 November – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
• Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to Nelson St off-ramp citybound
Monday 27 until Thursday 30 November – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am the following morning:
• Southern Motorway to Northwestern Motorway link (SH1 to SH16) westbound
• Southern Motorway (SH1) to Nelson St off-ramp citybound
Monday 27 until Thursday 30 November – CLOSED – overnight from 8.30pm until 5am the following morning:
• Newton Rd on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
Tuesday 28 November – CLOSED – overnight from 10pm until 5am the following morning:
• Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to St Lukes Rd off-ramp westbound
Tuesday 28 November – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am the following morning:
• Wellington St on-ramp to Northern Motorway (SH1) northbound
Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 November – CLOSED – overnight from 8.30pm until 5am the following morning:
• Western Springs on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) eastbound
Note: When the Nelson St off-ramp from SH16 is closed the links to the Southern Motorway (SH1) and the Port (SH16) will remain open and vice versa.
During these times motorists are requested to follow the signposted detours while the closures are in operation.
Transit New Zealand regrets any inconvenience caused.
In the event of inclement weather, the closures will be postponed to the next fine evening.
The CMJ Project
Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project, completed in January 2005, covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Cook St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St. The SH16 Newton Rd to Western Springs Auxiliary Lane westbound widening project is included in CMJ Stage 2 works.
The Public Information Centre at 13-19 Howe St, Freemans Bay is no longer open on a regular basis. Any member of the public who has concerns about or wishes to discuss aspects of the project may make an appointment by phoning 0800 CMJ CORE (0800 265 2673).
